National Guard Mobilization at Armory Building. "The famous General Motors Sit-Down Strike (also called the Flint Sit-Down Strike) began in December, 1936. Michigan's newly-elected Governor, Frank Murphy, did not take office until January 1, 1937. He then acted almost immediately to intervene. Murphy (who later served as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court) mobilized the Michigan National Guard, and sent them to Flint to preserve order. These photos show the call-up of the Ann Arbor guard contingent." - Wystan Stevens
