The Soap Box Derby Champion And A Race Winner: John Mayfield, 14, of 516 Eighth St., Shown At the Top, heard the cheers of a crowd of 6,000 persons as he crossed the finish line yesterday to win the first Daily News - Chevrolet Soap Box Derby. His car, which won prizes for the fastest time, the best design, and the best brakes, will represent Ann Arbor in the national finals on August 16 at Akron, O. Allan Crandall, 11, of 208 N. First St., runner-up, is shown standing beside Mayfield.
