These two swimmers and their coach came all the way from Austin, Texas to the N.C.A.A. swimming meet which started here today. At the left is Ralph Flanagan, probably the best free styler in the U. S. He is ineligible for the meet here because he is a freshman at the University of Texas. He will be eligible for the national A.A.U. meet next week at Columbus.
In the center is Adolph Kiefer, world's back-stroke champion, and at the right is the coach "Tex" Robertson, former University of Michigan star.
The above picture was snapped this morning just before the finals in the 1,500 meters. Robertson and Flanagan are giving Kiefer some advice. However, the best Kiefer could do was to place third behind Stanhope of Ohio and Cutler of Harvard.
