With The Men In Service

Servicemen In School and Out

Ann Arbor and county servicemen in this country have been gaining many skills at various training schools.  Recent graduates of Army, Navy and Marine training courses are the following:

Corp. James E. Neumaier, USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Neumaier, of 818 Gott St., has completed three months of ground school work t the Athens, Ga., Navy pre-flight school and is now training at Dallas, Tex.  He was transferred to Georgia from the CAA War Training Service School in Lafayette, La.

Cadet Erwin Earl Pryer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben E. Pryer of 1614 Dexter St., has been graduated from the primary training course of the Army Air Forces at Jackson, Tenn.

Cadet John C. Stegeman, son of Albert A. Stegeman of 2204 Brockman Blvd., has completed his training at the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics in Orangeburg, S. C., and has been sent for basic training to the Army Air Forces school at Shaw Field, Sumter, S. C.

From Gunnery School

Sgt. Adrian C. Onderdonk has been graduated from gunnery school in Kingman, Ariz., and has been assigned to a field at Woodward, Okla.

Seaman Second Class Robert L. Briggs, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Briggs of 604 E. Washington St., was graduated from the Fire Controlman School at Great Lakes, Ill.

Fireman First Class Richard H. Dawson, son of Mrs. James Dawson of 1132 White St., was graduated from the Aviation Machinist's Mate school at Great Lakes, Ill.

Finishes Course

Pfc. Carl W. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Brown of Reading, having finished his course at Chanute Field, Ill., is now a graduated weather observer.

Pfc. Walter G. Enners, son of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Enners of 2184 Main St., was graduated as an aircraft mechanic from the Army Air Forces technical school at Seymour Johnson Field, N. C.

Pfc. John Neil Kittel, son of Mrs. Rose Kittel of Whitmore Lake, has completed his armament training at the Army Air Forces Technical school at Lowry Field, Colo.

Cadet Earl A. Hong has completed his primary training at the Curtis Flying School, Brady, Tex., and is remaining there for basic training in the Army Air Forces.

Roy Anton Martin, Jr., husband of Mrs. Sara Martin of 219 E. Liberty St., having completed the machinist's mate course at Great Lakes, Ill., is now a "qualified striker" working for his petty officer's rating.

Graduated In Oklahoma

Reginald H. Fischer, aviation machinist's mate, third class, was recently graduated from the Naval Air Technical Training Center at Norman, Okla.  His Ann Arbor address is Route 6.

Danhof Baldwin Yntema, son of Prof. Hessel E. Yntema of 1415 E. Stadium Blvd., was graduated from the aviation radioman course at the Naval Air Technical Training Center is Memphis, Tenn.

Still attending technical schools are the following men:

Pfc. Herman Albert Welke, son of Mrs. Anna Welke of 1900 Ellswirth Rd., is enrolled in the gunnery department of the Army Armored School at Fort Knox, Ky.

Cadet Nelson W. Navarre, 415 Longshore Dr., is taking pre-flight training at San Antonio, Tex.

Cadet Charles Stiede, 2524 N. Main St., is also enrolled in the pre-flight training course at San Antonio, Tex.

Pvt. Jack T. McDonald, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. McDonald of Whitmore Lake, is training as a radio operator mechanic at the Army Air Forces technical school at Sioux Falls. S. D.

At Mechanics School

Pvt. James F. Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray of Route 6. has entered the B-24 Liberator bomber mechanics school at. Keesler Field, Biloxi, Miss.

Cadet Gordon L. Esckilsan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence W. Esckilson of 1814 Parkwood St., is training as a bombarier at Midland Army Airfield, Tex.

Cadet John W. Walcott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred G. Walcott of 2401 Vinewood Ave., has begun his basic pilot training at Perrin Field, Tex.

Pvt. Robert L. Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Michael of 807 Oakwood Pl., is taking his basic training in the Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla.

Pvt. Charles Wallis Edmunds, son of Mrs. Charles W. Edmunds of 1619 Cambridge Rd., is training as an infantryman, specialists, at Camp Wolters, Tex.

Pfc. William C. Rohn, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Rohn of 715 E. Ann St., is now stationed at the Army Air Base, Kearns, Utah.

At Albion

Aviation Student George F. Vlisides, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Vlisides of 1317 Sheehan St., has entered the College Training program of the Army Air Forces in the detachment at Albion College.

Pvt. Robert A. Steinke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman E. Steinke of 711 W. Jefferson St., is training with the field artillery at Fort Sill, Okla.

Douglas A. Cowin, son of Rev. and Mrs. Frederick Cowin of 1621 Granger Ave., is a student in the Navy V-12 unit at the North Texas Agricultural College, near Dallas.  As a future Marine Corps office, he will be sent to Parris Island, S. C.

Pvt. Vern Shipley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ava Shipley of 817 W. Summit St., is an aviation student at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn.  After five months of study, he will be appointed an aviation cadet.

Also At Macalester

Pvt. Fred C. Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver H. Perry of 406 Fifth St., is also an aviation student at Macalester College.

Thomas J. Marshall of 918 S. Forest Ave., has been assigned to the Steward's Mate training department of the Merchant Marine, in the school stationed at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, N. Y.

Robert F. Blaess, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Blaess, 1004 S. Main St., Kenneth W. Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Henry, 1502 Cambridge Rd., and Jay M. Terbush, son of of Mr. and Mrs. Jay M. Terbush, 514 E. William St., are aviation cadets in the pre-flight school at Maxwell Field, Ala.

New Father Overseas

Pvt. Gilbert Lansky, is somewhere overseas, his wife, Ida, of 107 Longman Lane, has been informed.  Pvt. Lansky is attached to the salvage division of the Quartermaster Corps.

Inducted into the Army last April, he received his basic training at Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyo.  Before entering the Army, Pvt. Lansky was in business with his father and brothers, P. Lansky & Sons.

His wife gave birth, Nov. 6, to a seven-pound boy, Harvey Irwin.

Long Way Home

The Sinelli brothers, Louis and Alex, sons of Mrs. Louis Sinelli of 716 Miner St., get around geographically.  Alex, in India since August, is now a staff sergeant, while Louis, a private first class, participated in the invasion of Sicily.  He landed in Africa last December.

Alex, a member of the Army Air Forces ground crew, trained at Selfridge Field and at Fort Dix, N. J.

With the Fleet

Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Jack Gray Pruner, 21, formerly stationed at Grosse Ile Naval station, is now in the South Pacific.  He left for sea in late July from a California port.  His wife, the former Mary Wightman, was in California with her husband before he left.  Mrs. Pruner is now living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Wightman, of 902 Miller Ave.

Completing his boot training in October of last year, Jack worked as an assistant in charge of one of the laboratories at Grosse Ile.  A 1940 graduate of Ann Arbor High school, Pruner was active there in baseball and swimming.  At the time of his enlistment, he was a tool and die trouble-shooter at the bomber plant.

His brother Bill, 30, a motor machinist's mate first class, is also in the Pacific area.  He is a torpedo boat engineer.

In Diesel School

Harold Frederick Paul, 25, fireman third class, is now in the Naval diesel school at the University of Illinois in Urbana.  "Whitey" finished his boot training at Great Lakes last month.

After his 1937 graduation from Ann Arbor High school, Paul worked as a pressman for The Ann Arbor News.  When he finishes service school, he will be eligible for the rating of motor machinist's mate.  

He is the son of Mrs. Lydia Paul of 513 E. Jefferson St.  Another brother, Walter, is a sergeant in the Army, stationed with a MP unit in Washington.
