U-M Coed From Kentucky Named ‘Queen
University coed Carole Jenkins of Valley Station, Ky., was granted her wish for funds to provide an electric wheel chair for a polio-crippled friend yesterday when she was chosen "Queen for a Day” during the national March of Dimes kick-off telecast from the University’s Intramural Building.
Miss Jenkins, 20-year-old junior in the School of Education, wanted the chair for Miss Euline McCorkle, 22, who has been crippled by polio for 11 years and is a patient at Ann Arbor Convalescent Home.
The student Miss Jenkins also won a new foreign car and a week’s trip to Paris during spring vacation.
Besides the telecast, an outdoor variety program was held on campus to mark the kickoff of the National 1959 March of Dimes.
Singer Johnny Cash, who had flown from California to take part in the variety program, was stricken with a severe case of mumps and confined to his hotel before the program started.
About 1,000 persons attended the program, which featured singer Denise Lor, actor-comedian Orson Bean, singer Margie Rayburn, the University Glee Club and Band and the six Irish students who participated on the Ireland March of Dimes float in the Tournament of Roses Parade.
