Old City Hall ’Stone Yields Nothing But Mystery
—SEARCH IS ON: Two workmen begin the job of removing the cornerstone of the old City Hall to see if the city officials placed any items inside 56 years ago when the old building was dedicated.
—CORNERSTONE IS REMOVED: The cornerstone bearing the date 1907 is removed from the old city hall by three workmen. The stone faced Huron St. on the corner of Huron and N. Fifth Ave. The workmen found it a solid block with no evidence that papers or other items were placed there at the time of its dedication.
—MAYOR EXAMINES IT: Mayor Cecil O'Creal (right foreground) and “observers” Roger A. Gatward (bending over stone) and Stephen J. Filipiak (in the background) are shown the 1907 cornerstone by the workmen. They—and others, principally passersby—were interested onlookers who were disappointed by the lack of “loot.”
— MYSTERY STILL REMAINS: Finding nothing behind the Huron St. cornerstone bearing the date 1907, workmen remove the stone on the Fifth Ave. side of the corner—still without results. Not satisfied yet, they bored a hole in the masonry behind the stope. The two-hour search was futile. No 1907 records were found.
