MANDICH NAMED ‘MOST VALUABLE’

By Wayne DeNeff

DETROIT—Michigan’s football players expect to see the sights in California next month—but only insofar as it does not interfere with their main objective: victory over Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl.

“Once again we’ll have to rise up and tighten our chin straps,” said Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler.

“We now must exert an even greater effort to prove we are the class of the Big Ten. We see we are up against another great challenge in undefeated Southern California.”

Schembechler spoke at a gathering of about 1,200 who had turned out last night to honor the Big Ten co-champions who last Saturday hung a 24-12 defeat on old-rival and top-ranked Ohio State.

Last night’s event was the 49th annual Football Bust of the University of Michigan Club of Detroit.

“We’ll meet USC, the cream of the coast in the Rose Bowl and it’ll be the 11th game on their schedule,” said Schembechler. “As you know, it’s a regular game for them,” he joked in reference to the Trojans fourth straight appearance in the premier of the bowl games.

Singled out for special honors at the banquet were Capt. Jim Mandich who was voted “most valuable player” by his teammates and defensive back Brian Healy who performs as well in the classroom as on the football field.

Mandich won the Louis B. Hyde Memorial Award and Healy, a pre-med student majoring in psychology won the Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship Award.

Twenty-five seniors were specially honored including Morris Abrahams, Bob Baumgartner, Dick Brown, Dick Caldarazzo, Garvie Craw, Tom Curtis, Eric Federico, Al Francis, John Gabler, Mike Hankwitz, Healy, Jerry Imsland, Joe Jones, Joe Lukz, Mandich, Barry Pierson, Cecil Pryor, Bob Ritley, Pete Sarantos, Phil Seymour, Tom Takach, Frank Titas, Tim Wadhams, Bob White and George Zuganelis.

Each and every senior in brief comments lauded both Schembechler and their former coach, Bump Elliott, who had recruited them. The players had given the game ball to Elliott following the victory last Saturday.
