Sorority chapter marks 71st birthday Sunday
A 71st anniversary will be celebrated Sunday by the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The observance will take place at the 10:30 a.m. service at Bethel AME Church, where the Rev. John A. Woods is pastor.
The public is invited to the service during which the guest minister will be the Rev. Carolyn Knight, associate pastor at Caanan Baptist Church in New York City. She will deliver the morning message from this year’s Delta theme: “Challenge, Change, Choice.” Knight is an assistant to the Rev. Wyatt T. Walker, civil rights activist who recently returned from Syria with the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Delta is an international public service organization of predominantly black college educated women. Currently there are over 100,000 members in more than 712 chapters located on college campuses and in communities in 43 of the 50 states, including Alaska, Hawaii, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, West Germany and Nassau, Bahamas.
The sorority’s public service program centers around a Five-Point Program Thrust in the areas of educational development, economic development, physical and mental health, international awareness and involvement, and political awareness and involvement.
Chapter members are involved in networking and forming coalitions with churches, schools and other organizations for community service in all of those areas.
