Having a ball with masks: October is mask month at the Ann Arbor Art Association, 117 W. Liberty St. Adults looking for creative entertainment are invited to drop in for a special evening of maskmaking from 7 to 9 pm., Friday, Oct. 23.

Just in time for Halloween, this adults-only session provides materials and personal instruction in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere which will be perfect for getting together with old friends and for meeting new ones.

Participants will also receive a discount coupon for refreshments at the Bird of Paradise. Admission is $3 including instruction and materials. For additional information, call 994-8004.

Minority arts aid: The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) is currently accepting applications for its Minority Arts Administration Fellowships (MAAF).

Supported by the Ford Foundation, the George Gund Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, program alumni, and Arts Midwest's members-friends, MAAF was established in 1989 to assist people of color to develop careers in arts management.

Six fellowships are awarded annually to African-American, Asian-American, Latino, or Native-American individuals who are currently residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, or Wisconsin.

The applicant must be willing to relocate during the nine-month fellowship period and have a secondary degree or substantial experience. Each fellow receives a $20,000 stipend, plus $4,500 for travel and miscellaneous expenses.

Painting talk: Grace Hartigan, the internationally recognized painter who chairs the painting department at the Maryland Institute of Art, will deliver a talk titled "Forty Years of Painting" at Chrysler Auditorium, across from the University of Michigan Art and Architecture Building, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The lecture will be hosted by Asst. Dean of Art and Architecture Barbara Cervenka. A reception for Hartigan will be held in the Jean Paul Slusser gallery immediately following her lecture. For information, call 763-4417.

ArtVideo dates: The University of Michigan Museum of Art has announced their October ArtVideos to be held in their Audio/Visual Room at noon on Wednesday afternoons: Oct. 7, "Louise Nevelson in Process"; Oct. 14, "Two Faces of the 17th Century: Rembrandt and Velasquez"; Oct. 21, "Picasso: A Painter's Diary" and Oct. 28, "Vienna 1900". Roundup: Finally, a handful of exhibitions worth catching before they pack up and leave town:

■ "Aspects in Metal." Works by internationally recognized artists and the University of Michigan instructors Gene and Hiroko Sato Pijanowski, with U-M students Mark Alderette, Kevin Brown and Nicole Jacquard. The Pijanowskis' works included sensuously shaped, meticulously arranged abstract sculptures and jewelry of metals, glass and paint. A recent American Craft feature said of the couple: "Borrowing from ancient techniques and blending Japanese and American sensibilities in an ongoing collaboration as subtle as the whispered confidences of lovers, Hiroko and Gene Pijanowski set no limits on ideas, skills and themselves." ■ "Capturing the Spirit: Portraits of Contemporary Mexican Artists." A Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, this photographic display showcases 40 of Mexico's most prominent creative personalities including Nobel laureate Octavio Paz, writer Carlos Fuentes, artist Rufino Tamayo, and conductor Enrique Diemeke. ■ "Katherine Pfeffer: Michigan's Natural Beauty." Paintings by this noted Michigan artist and framing shop owner which capture our region in its many seasonal splendors. Through Oct. 25 at the University of Michigan League Buffet, 911 N. University, 764-00446.

■ "The German Print Portfolio: 1890-1930." An innovative exhibit examining the print portfolio's elevation to the status of an aesthetic equal to other art forms, with works by Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein, Max Becmann, Oskar Kokoscha, Otto Dix, George Gross, and Rafello Busoni.
