Artist Talk | Full Circle: 3 Years of Pinhole Photography by Glenn Taylor

Join robotics researcher and self-taught artist and photographer Glenn Taylor for a talk on pinhole photography and his methods for creating images. Taylor discovered pinhole photography with his kids at a hands-on workshop at the Ann Arbor District Library in 2019, and has been hooked ever since.

This event is in conjunction with the exhibit Full Circle: 3 Years of Pinhole Photography by Glenn Taylor on display in the Downtown Multi-Purpose Room, January 16–February 25, 2023.

Artist Talk | Sara Adlerstein: Art and Science: a Journey Bridging the Divide

Traditionally, art and science have been treated as two separate disciplines, but together they have a great impact on multiple levels. Join visual artist and environmental scientist Sara Adlerstein for a talk on her vision and experience in a journey bridging these disciplines. She will also share images of her often environmentally based paintings that communicate concerns, dreams, and emotions, all of which emerge from her deep and relentless love for life.

Drawing for Adults | Exploring Oil Pastels: Wintery Windows AADL.TV

This month, Payton will help viewers find inspiration in the paintings of artist Andrew Wyeth.  Watch as Payton demonstrates the layering of oil pastels and draws a realistic, sombre window with snow falling softly around it. For this project, you'll need a sheet of black construction or drawing paper, oil pastels, a pencil, an eraser, and some paper towels.

Soot Sprite Spree Crochet

Make your very own soot sprites as seen in the Studio Ghibli movies Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro! Create a jar of freshly caught soot sprites, or make a palm-sized sprite using a quick and simple crochet pattern. Beginners are always welcome, but some previous crochet experience is recommended.

Drawing for Adults | Autumn Still Life: Watercolor Washes on AADL.TV

This week, Payton will demonstrate how to capture the warm ambience of autumn in a  watercolor still life!  For this class, you'll need a sheet of watercolor paper,  watercolor paint sets, watercolor brushes, cups of water, pencils, erasers, and paper towel or rags.

How to Find Your Creative Style By Getting Totally Lost, with Illustrator and Podcaster Andy J. Pizza

The path to finding the work that flows with ease is surprisingly not always an easy one, according to illustrator Andy J. Pizza. In this talk, Andy shares the personal story of how avoiding failure at all costs got in the way of his creative success, and how his drawing project that was as much equal parts daily, as it was fail-y, was the key to finding his style and ultimately a thriving creative practice.

This week, learn how to create realistic leaves from observation. Reference images will be used for this project. For this activity, you will need paper, colored pencils, eraser, and something that realistically portrays a plant, such as a photograph in a book or magazine.

This month, Payton will demonstrate how to create the visual illusion of movement as we compose dreamy landscapes.  Learn how to work from your imagination and use acrylic paint and dotting techniques to make a visually compelling, flowing image.  Materials used in this lesson include acrylic paints, brushes, cotton swabs, canvas paper, water cups, paper towels or rags, pencils, and erasers

 

Drawing for Kids | Snowy Starry Night on AADL.TV

This month, Payton will demonstrate how to draw a snowy, starry nighttime scene inspired by artist Vincent Van Gogh! Students will layer colors with oil pastels and use vibrant line work to create a sense of movement and add an element of excitement to their artistic masterpiece. For this class, you'll need a sheet of blue construction paper and oil pastels.
