The following are still pretty good, but they get increasingly pushy on the religious front. By the end it just feels like I’m being yelled at by a priest, who is telling me to go to church.

The audio books are narrated by Patrick Stuart, who does a fantastic job, I recommend it.

I don't understand why most publishers now are claiming "Magician" is the first in the series. I really don't think the author intended it that way, and I think it takes a lot of the magic out of the series if children read them out of order. There is such a thing as a "prequel," and it's so much fun to read "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" first and then find out more about the origins of Narnia later in "The Magician's Nephew!"

Great even for a young child submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 11, 2014, 7:57pm I specifically re-read this with an eye toward reading it to my child and... he loved it (at age 6 1/2). Definitely a "keep reading! no, I don't want to go to bed!" kind of book. I love when I can find good literature that interests him, instead of the latest Bakugan chapter book.

I did occasionally have to stop and give historical context, or translate a term from the British use to English (a "torch" is a flashlight, e.g.). And while I remember the movie having long and violent battle scenes, those same scenes in the book are only 2 pages each, and not very violent even at that. An excellent and well-done book with enough action to interest a kid

Ward's thesis that the book is suffused with the spirit of the sphere of Jupiter - true kingship, resplendent in its majesty - is certainly compelling.

It's the classic start to the story (Though the chronological start is a more interesting read I thought...See The Magician's Nephew). I loved the stories that came after but did not like this as much as the others.
