The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under -- maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

Enjoyed it submitted by evie2017 on August 25, 2017, 7:02pm An intriguing read and intimate look into the mind of Sylvia Plath. A quick read but well worth coming back to.

An interesting book submitted by cayluebeck on July 23, 2020, 2:35pm Plath's memoir novel is interesting... it is dark, thoughtful and very complex. The language is easy to read but the messaging is much deeper than what first meets the eye. The scene with the fig tree felt particularly poignant to me. Make sure you are in a healthy mindset before reading this book because it deals with heavy depression.

Great College Read submitted by umich.reader on May 30, 2022, 1:34am TW: suicide

A great (but deep) read for college students. I felt some of this book in my soul. I could really feel how Esther slowly unravels over the course of the book. Cathartic read.

Excellent submitted by ellec on July 13, 2022, 1:31pm I first read this book in high school then came back to it a few years later in college. I was amazed by how much more I picked a second time. Would recommend!
