Revolutionary Jazz submitted by kernelenchilada on July 9, 2013, 1:25pm This is Miles' response to the onslaught of electric instruments and the birth of rock n roll. He assembles an all-star group, often doubling up on drums, bass, and electric keys to put out a sound that is out of this world.

As a bass clarinetist, I am partial to Bennie Maupin's eerie tones and moody atmospheric wailings on the bass clarinet, but this is only one piece of the puzzle. This album needs to be listened to start to finish and with the first two tracks clocking in at over 25 minutes each, it is no easy feat but well worth it!

Building Sense Out of Chaos submitted by Meginator on July 4, 2020, 12:15pm This album kicks off by building an eerie mood out of traditional jazz forms and techniques, breathing life and purpose into loosely structured music. These tracks feel more complex than some of Davis’s earlier work, more expansive and more experimental but no less musical or effective. In one sense, this album is an exercise in building sense out of musical chaos, as the musicians create rhythm and flow out of seemingly disjointed sounds. Also interesting is the use of electric instruments, including piano and guitar, that provide a different edge to the music that isn’t present in Davis’s earlier albums. Altogether, this represents an interesting artistic evolution from one of jazz’s most inventive pioneers. It’s a classic album worth revisiting time and again, important in the grand scheme of musical history yet also satisfying.
