Frustrating submitted by Susan C on December 10, 2011, 6:43am Another novel with women doing dumb, thoughtless, careless things.
After the second careless episode in the book, I was ready to stop reading.
The lack of the character's ability to talk to one another is also frustrating.
It is an ok read - more frustrating than fun.
I wouldn't pick it up if there were other things to read.

3 star submitted by sparks_bridgette on June 24, 2014, 5:27am I liked the characters and enjoyed the start of the book. The ending just did not do it for me. A happy ever after and everything worked out a little too perfectly for my likes. Not believable.

Meh submitted by 21621031390949 on July 3, 2015, 3:57pm Meh. Very meh, if meh can be very. Boring book, very predictable, not particularly well-written. Began it because it was suggested to my book group. Slogged through more than half, then decided not to waste more time. Checked out the end to confirm its predictability. Yep. Pass this one by.

small town life submitted by mowjac on June 20, 2020, 4:57pm I picked up this book years ago, started it, hated it and put it down. Started it again during the pandemic and appreciated all the small town life--positives and negatives. Aging and loss is a large theme, living in financial poverty and deep community, and a huge dose of how the natural world imbues and inhabits the people who live there.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula submitted by pamhockey25 on August 8, 2022, 6:08pm Would you move from Chicago to the UP? Can you imagine what a culture shock that would be? This debut novel examines that scenario--as Madeline gives up everything to move 'up north' and discover her roots.

UP Charm submitted by leah karr on August 19, 2022, 6:59pm I am partial to anything small-town UP, and enjoyed this book. The authors second book was marvelous, this was good

On the shore of Lake Superior submitted by ajh on August 10, 2023, 3:01pm I really enjoyed this. I spend a lot of time in the UP, and I think this captures the dynamic of small towns up there.
