"Winn Van Meter is heading for his family's retreat on the pristine New England island of Waskeke. Normally a haven of calm, for the next three days this sanctuary will be overrun by tipsy revelers as Winn prepares for the marriage of his daughter Daphne to the affable young scion Greyson Duff. Winn's wife, Biddy, has planned the wedding with military precision, but arrangements are sideswept by a storm of salacious misbehavior and intractable lust: Daphne's sister, Livia, who has recently had her heart broken by Teddy Fenn, the son of her father's oldest rival, is an eager target for the seductive wiles of Greyson's best man; Winn, instead of reveling in his patriarchal duties, is tormented by his long-standing crush on Daphne's beguiling bridesmaid Agatha; and the bride and groom find themselves presiding over a spectacle of misplaced desire, marital infidelity, and monumental loss of faith in the rituals of American life"--Dust jacket.

Amazing post-americana novel! submitted by eapearce on April 30, 2014, 4:24pm It is hard to believe that Seating Arrangements is Maggie Shipstead's first novel! At once sad and hilarious, the novel is unexpectedly gripping. The best part of it, for me, was Shipstead's skill in expressing to the reader both the true nature of the characters, and the way that they viewed one another. The reader thus gets the amazing experience of knowing what each character is thinking, knowing how the other characters feel about one another, and of formulating his or her own opinion about each person in the book as well. I describe this book as "post-americana" because it deals with themes that many consider "fundamentally American:" coastal homes, East Coast privilege, extravagant weddings, the struggle for wealth and power, and the ties of family. However, this book is far from a comforting tale of a quintessential American summer wedding. It exposes the worst parts of americana and the most unsettling parts of human nature to create a story that left me asking at the end, "... but, everything has to turn out okay, right?" I would highly recommend the book, especially to book clubs!

Hilarious and Deeply Heartrending submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 20, 2020, 11:59am This novel is set on a beach and features lots of cocktails and simmering family resentments. It's a page-turner with a WASPy bite. Also, read Andrea Barrett's Ship Fever --- It's a compilation of historical short stories about scientists and naturalists.
