Mary Jekyll, alone and penniless following her parents death, is curious about the secrets of her fathers mysterious past. One clue in particular hints that Edward Hyde, her fathers former friend and a murderer, may be nearby, and there is a reward for information leading to his capture a reward that would solve all of her immediate financial woes. But her hunt leads her to Hydes daughter, Diana, a feral child left to be raised by nuns. With the assistance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Mary continues her search for the elusive Hyde, and soon befriends more women, all of whom have been created through terrifying experimentation: Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherin Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein. When their investigations lead them to the discovery of a secret society of immoral and power-crazed scientists, the horrors of their past return. fun, but dragged submitted by 21621031390949 on August 10, 2019, 12:08pm Fun, but the last chapter was unnecessary and dragged on. The narrator of the audio book is quite good

Interesting submitted by amd12 on August 27, 2020, 10:35am Good and interesting start to the series.

Nineteenth Century Fan Fiction submitted by KatieD on October 31, 2022, 1:40pm This book features characters from several works of nineteenth century fiction, primarily science fiction. It is like an incredible fan fiction of nineteenth century literature. What I liked most about it was the way it took the side-lined female characters from these novels and places them in the center of the action.

The story begins with the respectable Mary Jekyll trying to unravel the mystery of her past after the death of her mother. From there, she uncovers more and more mysteries and begins to see that it all connects.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did an excellent job. This book has a good balance of character development and action and I found myself listening every chance that I got. One does not need to be familiar with all of the nineteenth century fiction referenced. I was familiar with some of the stories, but used wikipedia synopses for the others. Even that was unnecessary to understand the story, but I was curious about the background for the characters.
