From her imaginative childhood to her career as an illustrator, designer, and animator for Walt Disney Studios, Mary wouldn't play by the rules. At a time when studios wanted to hire men and think in black and white, Mary painted twinkling emerald skies, peach giraffes with tangerine spots, and magenta horses that could fly.

A Unique Artistic Visionary submitted by Meginator on August 17, 2020, 7:29pm This delightful picture book does double duty as a very basic biography of legendary Disney designer Mary Blair and as a book about the importance of sticking to your independent artistic vision. Some of the details of the timeline get a bit lost in the simple text, but the story holds together well as a framework for thinking about the use of color in visual art. The illustrations mimic Blair’s iconic, highly saturated style and do justice to her legacy while directly showing readers what it is that makes her work so unique and special. This is a lovely testament to Blair’s legacy and an encouraging book for budding artists and art-lovers; for Disney fans, it’s essential.
