What does having an amazing university, a plethora of fantastic local independent bookstores, and a pretty slam-bang public library system (if we do say so ourselves) bring to a town?

Authors. Lots and lots of authors.

In fact, so many authors pass through the area that sometimes it can be hard to keep track of who is speaking and when and where. To help guide you, Pulp curated a highlights list of June 2017 author events.

Mark Athitakis
➥ Friday, June 2, 7 pm "> Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch
Mark Athitakis will discuss his new book of literary criticism about Midwestern fiction,
The New Midwest. Books will be available for purchase. Read an interview that Pulp did with Athitakis here.

Carey Whitepigeon
➥ Sunday, June 4, 3 pm "> Nicola’s Books
Carey Whitepigeon, a local member of the Potowatomi tribe, will share her young adult book Spark Aflight, the first book in her Daughter of Dawn and Darkness series. The book features a teenaged orphan who gets invited to visit her mother’s planet of New Dawn and jumps at the chance to solve the mysteries of her past.

Courtney Maum and Callie Collins
➥ Tuesday, June 6, 7 pm "> Literati
Maum, who is the author of I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You, will read from her second book, Touch, and talk with Helen Zell Writers’ Program member Callie Collins. Touch tells the story of a woman who is hired to predict trends in technology but soon realizes that people are turning against the electronics that have been a staple of modern life for so long.

826Michigan’s Storymakers Dinner featuring Peter Ho Davis
➥ Wednesday, June 7, 7 pm "> Zingerman’s Greyline
The annual event benefiting 826Michigan will feature Peter Ho Davies, author of The Fortunes, a novel of four linked stories about the Chinese-American experience. Tickets can be purchased for the dinner here.

Amy Thielen
➥ Wednesday, June 14, 7 pm "> Literati
Amy Thielen will present her debut memoir, Give a Girl a Knife, a coming-of-age account of her love of food and cooking. Thielen is a chef and has won the James Beard award twice for her food writing.

Roxane Gay
➥ Friday, June 16, 7 pm "> Hill Auditorium
Roxane Gay is the author of the essay collection Bad Feminist, the short story collection Difficult Women, and the novel An Untamed State. Most recently she has written her memoir, Hunger, which talks about food, bodies, and our relationship to both. Tickets to the event are available through the Michigan Union Ticket Office.

Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival (A2CAF) 2017
➥ Saturday, June 17, 11 am-5:30 pm; Sunday, June 18, 12:30-5:30 pm "> Ann Arbor District Library Downtown Branch
This year’s A2CAF will feature guests like Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the Lunch Lady graphic novels, Raina Telgemeier, author of Smile, Sisters, and Ghosts, and Ben Hatke, author of the Zita the Spacegirl series. Attendees can meet these authors and participate in comics and arts-related activities over the course of the weekend.

Ann Arbor Book Festival
➥ Saturday, June 17, 12-8 pm "> Washington Street between 4th Ave. and 5th Ave.
Authors Annette Gordon-Reed, Edward McClelland, Ellen Meeropol, Christina Olson, and Adam Schuitema will all be at this year’s Ann Arbor Book Festival.

Desiree Cooper, Robin Gaines, Mardi Jo Link, and Mary Kay Zuravleff
➥ Monday, June 19, 7 pm "> Literati
The four authors, who all have recent publications, will host a joint event at Literati. Desiree Cooper, a Detroit community activist and former attorney, has penned the short story collection Know the Mother. Robin Gaines will share her first novel, Invincible Summer. Mardi Jo Link, author of the acclaimed memoir Bootstrapper, has a short fiction piece in the recent anthology Bob Seger’s House and Other Stories. Mary Kay Zuravleff wrote her novel, Man Alive!, in 2013.

Michael Spradlin
➥ Tuesday, June 27, 7 pm "> Nicola’s Books
Best-selling author Michael Spradlin will celebrate the release of his newest children’s book, Prisoner of War. The book features a boy who lies about his age during World War II in order to join the Marines and gets captured as a prisoner of war.

Ryan White
➥ Thursday, June 29, 7 pm "> Literati
Jimmy Buffet fans won’t want to miss author Ryan White, who has just written a biography of the singer-songwriter titled Jimmy Buffet: A Good Life All the Way. Interviews from friends, family, and bandmates aid White in telling the story of the Margaritaville-seeking musician.
