Learn more about literacy in Washtenaw County! Join Washtenaw Literacy Director Amy Goodman and several adult literacy learners and tutors as they provide a snapshot of literacy challenges in our area.  Get inspired as you hear, first-hand, how improved literacy transforms the lives of students and the ways in which helping others has changed the lives of their tutors.

The Washtenaw Reads selection for 2019, Reading with Patrick, demonstrates the power of literacy.  Author Michelle Kuo's simple act of reading with her student Patrick built his confidence and changed his outlook as he became an expressive writer and dedicated reader.  The relationship between the student and teacher converted Patrick into a lifelong learner and expanded Michelle’s perspective. In our community, Washtenaw Literacy has been connecting teachers and students for nearly fifty years. Through a network of trained and supervised volunteer tutors, they reach nearly 2000 adults like Patrick each year in Washtenaw County alone. The Ann Arbor District Library has been an integral partner in this work, supporting tutoring and programming.

If you are interested in becoming a literacy tutor, the first step is to attend the ABCs of Washtenaw Literacy, a regularly scheduled one-hour informational session. Register for an upcoming session at www.WashtenawLiteracy.org.

The Washtenaw Reads program is a community initiative to promote reading and civic dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing a common book. Participating libraries include Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Milan, Northfield Township, Saline, and Ypsilanti. For more information about Washtenaw Reads and previous years' reads, go to wread.org.
