This event is for adults 21 and over.

Whiskey is a storied drink, but it’s also a mystery that reaches beyond the barley, buckwheat*, corn, rye, or wheat from which it’s distilled. Countries of origin are no longer limited to England, Ireland, Scotland and the United States. Then there’s the matter of ferreting out the difference between single malt, single pot still, grain, and blended whiskey varieties.

That’s a lot to take in whether you’re new to whiskey or consider it your drink of choice. Criminy! It’s enough to make a person reach for a wee dram to decide what’s worth trying—and what isn’t. Nothing’s worse than buying an expensive peaty scotch and being too embarrassed to admit that you weren’t expecting Eau de Band-Aid® on your phenolic averse palate.

If you want to get better at evaluating the taste of whiskey you can’t do it without an experiential understanding of the multi-sensorial aspects of flavor perception, which include taste, smell and mouthfeel. Join flavor and fragrance expert Michelle Krell Kydd, creator of the Smell & Tell series at AADL, as she discusses the unique aspects of four whiskeys at the MASH Bar on Washington. Michelle's lecture is free to all participants, but those wishing to have a taste will need to purchase their own flight of four whiskeys for a nominal fee.

Taste & Tell is a new series of delectable programming sponsored by the Ann Arbor District Library. Additional Taste & Tell events will take place at local Ann Arbor eating and drinking establishments. Stay tuned. Edutainment never tasted so good.

*Distillerie des Menhirs in Brittany, France uses buckwheat to make whiskey. It’s not available in the United States yet, but reviewers are already singing its praises.
