Smell and Tell: Follow Your Nose In the Great Outdoors

Where

County Farm Park

Description

Refresh your soul and raise your spirits as we follow the October scent trail at County Farm Park, where plants, fruits, roots and trees that shape the autumn scentscape are waiting to be discovered. We'll learn how to describe smells in nature using “scent mapping,” a sensory evaluation technique used by perfumers, and experience natural essences used in fine fragrance that echo the honeyed amberesque redolence of fall. Seasonal tastes on the sensory menu include: American persimmon, autumn olive jam, black walnuts, Mohawk red corn, Osmanthus tea, and birch bark syrup. Comfortable shoes that are appropriate for walking in the woods are highly recommended. This Smell & Tell event will take place rain or shine. We’ll meet inside the Field Operations Building, located to the right of Platt Road Pavilion (near the kiosk and playground at the park) and begin promptly.

WE ARE SO SORRY BUT THIS EVENT IS COMPLETELY FULL. This event is limited to 24 attendees and registration is required. To register, please send an email to eventregistrations@aadl.org that includes your FULL NAME, PHONE #, and your chosen date (Saturday or Sunday) for EVERY member of your party. You will receive a confirmation email after you’ve registered and a reminder the week before the event.  This event will also take place on Saturday, October 5; please register for one event only.

The Smell & Tell series explores the art + science connection in flavors and fragrance. It is led by Michelle Krell Kydd who is a trained “nose” in perfumery and editor of the award-winning blog Glass Petal Smoke. The Smell & Tell series celebrates its seventh anniversary year at the Ann Arbor District Library and is ongoing.
