Description

Researching African-American ancestry can be a tremendous struggle and tremendously rewarding. This session offers helpful resources, tips and pitfalls to avoid. Jessica Trotter of Capital Area District Library will give an overview of how to find and navigate resources and offer tips for research. 

Jessica Trotter is an archivist, lecturer, and public librarian. She specializes in genealogical research, with a particular focus on the Midwest, Michigan, Detroit, Ireland, Ontario, and the British Isles. In 2020, she was awarded Librarian of the Year by the Michigan Library Association, the Michigan Association for Media in Education and the Michigan Academic Library Association. She holds a Master of Science in Information, Archives and Records Management Specialization from the University of Michigan—but works in public libraries by day. She has presented regionally for the past six years including annually for the Barbara J. Brown / Abrams Foundation Family History Seminar. for the Genealogy Center at Allen County Public Library, and at the NGS Conference in 2018. Her genealogy research areas include Midwest, African American, British Isles, Canadian, and Early American research.
