MUSIC FRIDAY FIVE

Friday Five highlights music by Washtenaw County-associated artists and labels.

This week features acid/techno by JTC, psychedelic funk by Evan Haywood, indie rock by Tanager, pop-folk by Emma McDermott, and jazz by Olivia Van Goor and Paul Keller.

JTC, All Access No Excess EP
Tadd Mullinix will usually ping-pong between his various aliases for releases depending on the electronic music genre he's exploring. But even though he just released a full-length album, Intra.Actae, in November 2023 under his JTC guise, the Ann Arbor producer is already back with that handle for the All Access No Excess EP, which is comprised of four tracks of vintage-sounding techno and acid.

Evan Haywood, Professional Love
A couple of months ago, Evan Haywood released a live album, Canterbury Tales, which was culled from recordings made between 2014 and 2018 and features his folk and rock sides. The Ann Arbor producer and musician reached even deeper into his archives for Professional Love, a rough-and-ready collection of stoned funk and hip-hop-inflected recordings made in 2013 that features what are now some of the more prominent names in the local jazz scene, including Marcus Elliot, Ingrid Racine, Josef Deas, Michael Malis, and more. Listen to the album as you check out this feature on it in the Metro Times.

Tanager, "Haunted" video
I wrote about this fab single when it came out last September, but Tanager leader Elly Daftuar put some visuals to the tune just in time for the start of baseball season.

Emma McDermott, Orbit
This Ann Arbor native's debut album, She Likes to Fly, is a electro-pop record. But Emma McDermott's new EP, Orbit, wouldn't sound out of place at a coffeehouse open mic. While "Orbit You" has some electronic flourishes, the three songs on this record are all rooted in gentile guitar strumming.

Olivia Van Goor and Paul Keller, "My Old Friend, Spring"
Milford jazz vocalist Olivia Van Goor teamed up with the venerable Saline bandleader and bassist Paul Keller for this lovely little ode to the season (that is always delayed in Michigan).
