The Monday Mix is an occasional roundup of compilations, live recordings, videos, podcasts, and more by Washtenaw County-associated artists, DJs, radio stations, and record labels.

This edition features sights and sounds from Edgefest, the Michigan Electronic Music Collective (MEMCO), Immaculate Conception, a Resonant Soundscapes concert, and a Jay Stielstra tribute.

Various artists, Edgefest 28: Messages From the Edge
Edgefest, Ann Arbor's experimental jazz celebration, has been documented pretty well over its 28 years thanks to simulcasts on WCBN-FM and in-house audio recordings of the show—but whether that material is publicly available is a different story. But since 2020, when Edgefest was forced to go virtual, the Kerrytown Concert House (KCH), the home venue for the event, has been posting complete concerts from the festival on its YouTube page (along with many other videos from its robust concert offerings throughout the year). KCH posted nearly 17 hours from this past October's Edgefest 28, and there are multitudes more from past years.

Celebrating the Music of Jay Stielstra at The Ark, sets one & two, September 28, 2024
The full concert at The Ark celebrating the music of Ann Arbor folk legend Jay Stielstra is up on Judy Banker's YouTube page. The local singer-songwriter who worked frequently with Stielstra over the years was integral in organizing this celebration. We previewed the concert here.

Resonant Soundscapes, Burton Memorial Tower, Ann Arbor, November 3, 2024
Sara Tea, Garrett Schumann, and Julie Zhu combined their talents for Resonant Soundscapes, a series of concerts sponsored by the University of Michigan's Arts Initiative and AADL. Schumann and Tea processed Zhu's improvisations on the Burton Tower carillon, and attendees could listen to the instrument's raw sound or the live remixes via headphones and a smartphone.

Various artists, MEMCO's Saturation mixes
Balkans vs Kurds, Exposure Mix 71
Exposure mixes from the Michigan Electronic Music Collective (MEMCO)—a U-M affiliated student group—have been an important and regular part of the Washtenaw County sonic ecosystem for the past five years. But MEMCO is always looking for different ways to spotlight its neverending supply of talented creators, whether it's throwing dance parties or creating documentaries about the scene. The Saturation mix series is MEMCO's latest endeavor, showing DJs creating their mixes live in various locations, from a window sill or classroom to the great outdoors. Admittedly, watching DJs work isn't a scintillating thing for your eyeballs, but you won't be disappointed if you just close your peepers and listen to the music.

The first Exposure mix since the spring is by the Balkans vs Kurds duo, who mix a smidge of beats and melodies from the MIddle East and Eastern Europe with techno and hip-hop for a delightfully bonkers two hours of listening.

Various artists, Immaculate Conception's Fruits of Our Labor mixes
MEMCO spinoff Immaculate Conception, which features graduated members, continues to promote up-and-coming DJ talent with its Fruits of Our Labor series, which highlights women and gender-nonconforming artists from around the country, not just our area. I've been keeping track of the series through its Soundcloud playlist, which I just realized hasn't been updated in a while—and there have been 13 new mixes since then. Will not front: haven't listened to any of these yet, but Immaculate Conception's past track record of greatness speaks for itself.
