The Radar: New music by Washtenaw County-associated artists and labels

The Radar tracks new music by Washtenaw County-associated artists and labels.
This week:
North Ingalls, Fearless Amaretto, Levi Makula, RE:fusion CC:ontractor, FFANGS, Winged Wheel, Sex Kennedy's, Jakarta Kids, and Ratmatia.
North Ingalls
To Be Loved Back
Genre: country soul
Location: Ann Arbor
Notes: The long-awaited (by us) debut album by this seven-piece ensemble. Singer-songwriter Corazon Szell writes earnest, personal, country-steeped folk-rock tunes that quickly become earworms. Across the album's nine tracks, the three-piece horn section and honky-tonk piano provide arrangements that take the sound into Memphis Soul territory.

Fearless Amaretto
"Amaretto"
"Black Kat"
Genre: dance, rap
Location: Ypsilanti
Notes: Two sassy club jams from this genre-bending artist. "Amaretto" is the first new music since 2025's Take the Stage album, which we missed! But that's where the "Black Kat" single and music video come from.

Levi Makula
Rind
Genre: outsider indie
Location: Ypsilanti
Notes: Lo-fi bedroom pop where the 10 tracks sometimes feel like they're hanging by a thread, as Makula croon-talks the lyrics.

RE:fusion CC:ontractor
Plaid
Genre: experimental
Location: Ypsilanti
Notes: Levi Makula makes an appearance on this album by a fellow Ypsi bedroom experimentalist, contributing guitar to the nearly 18-minute closer, "The Makula Reactor (Gastrula Extrapolation)" (which also includes a guest spot from Laserbeams of Boredom's Craig Johnson).

FFANGS
"All My Life"
Genre: synth-pop, indie rock, vaporwave
Location: Ann Arbor
Notes: The first new song from the fantastic synth-pop songwriter Jacoby Jennings since 2018's Venia: Lost Songs, 2008-2018). For "All My Life," Jennings mixes guitars, synths, and lots of reverb to create a big-screen ballad that could soundtrack the lost 1980s John Cusack movie in your mind. Fingers crossed that a new album is imminent, but in the meantime, check out 2014's Apparitions and 2016's Dystopian Nights.

Winged Wheel
Desert So Green
Genre: experimental rock
Location: Ypsilanti and a lot of places
Notes: The local connection for this jam-centric drone-rock band is Fred Thomas (Idle Ray), but Winged Wheel is comprised of a slew of underground musicians from various parts of the U.S., including Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Whitney Johnson (Matchess, Circuit des Yeux), Cory Plump (Spray Paint), Matthew J. Rolin (Powers/Rolin Duo), and Lonnie Slack (Water Damage).

Sex Kennedy's
Suburban New Year's Theatrical Experience
Genre: experimental
Location: Ann Arbor
Notes: This five-song EP exists somewhere between lo-fi electronics and avant-rock weirdness.

Jakarta Kids
Demonstrosity
Genre: grindcore, metalcore
Location: Ann Arbor record label
Notes: We're not sure where Jakarta Kids are from, but this four-song EP of metallic powerviolence is on Ann Arbor's Sick Rat Records.

Ratmatia
Give Me the Cure
Genre: hardcore, death metal
Location: Ann Arbor
Notes: Another release on Ann Arbor's Sick Rat Records, this time by a band that started in Brownstown, Michigan, but has continued with singer-guitarist Nick Srabian now in grad school at U-M.
