Quintessentially Modern—and Midwestern: Landscape Typologies and Cultural Memes in the Miller House and Garden, Columbus, Indiana

Long hailed as one the most iconic works of mid-20th century American design, the Miller residence is noted for its material and formal elegance. While the designers—and indeed, the client—for this project were of global importance in both reach and influence, local designer Peter Osler will present a less common reading of this landmark, emphasizing its abstraction of familiar midwestern landscape typologies and cultural memes.

GIGA2: Guaranteed Income in Ann Arbor

Join us for a event learning about Guaranteed Income to Grow Ann Arbor, a guaranteed income pilot that will provide monthly payments of $528 to Ann Arbor entrepreneurs with low incomes for two years. You must be 18 years old, live in Ann Arbor, make less than 225% of the federal poverty line and be an entrepreneur, broadly defined. Researchers from the University of Michigan will be on hand to talk about the program and answer all your questions.

Art History in the Afternoon: Marc Chagall

Learn about Marc Chagall from retired arts and humanities teacher Kathy Gunderson. Chagall, born in Russia, lived most of his adult life in Paris. Throughout his long career he has been called a Surrealist and a Cubist but his dreamlike work is most distinctive for its brilliant and joyful use of color. Chagall is also known for his many public works throughout the world including the ceiling of the Paris Opera House and, a bit closer to home, his "Four Seasons" mosaic in downtown Chicago.

Art History in the Afternoon: Pablo Picasso

Learn about Pablo Picasso from retired arts and humanities teacher Kathy Gunderson. Picasso is, undoubtedly, the most recognized artist of the 20th century, having a career spanning over seventy years. He is best known as the co-founder of Cubism (along with Georges Braque) but Picasso was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of media and styles. His artwork bears the distinction as some of the most expensive paintings ever sold, as well as the most stolen artwork of a single artist.
