Exploring the Mind | How to Build and Sustain a Good Life: Lessons from Positive Psychology

Building and sustaining a good life is a goal shared by all individuals and societies. A good life entails happiness, health, engagement, deep relationships, moral character, and meaning, which is more than the absence of problems. Traditional approaches to a good life largely focus on identifying problems and reducing them. Required is a new kind of science and practice that expands existing approaches. Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living.

Exploring the Mind | Mindfulness, Interconnectedness, and Dignity

Hyper-connectedness is the defining feature of our lives, yet many people report loneliness and disconnection. In this talk, Professor Ramaswami Mahalingam will present a holistic, Mindful Mindset perspective to foster personal, social, and ecological connectedness. This mindfulness framework has seven features: Compassion, Sympathetic Joy, Situated Intersectional Awareness, Negative Capability, Wonder, Cultural Humility, and Generosity. He will provide examples of contemplative tools that can be used to cultivate a Mindful Mindset, which will help create a fulfilling life.

Chasing Dark Skies: Milky Way Photography in Michigan

Astrophotographer Adrian Bradley has been chasing dark skies — seeking out the Milky Way in particular — throughout Michigan for several years, honing his skills as a photographer. In this presentation, Adrian will share some of his photographs, give a brief overview of his process and equipment, and present tips for finding and measuring dark sky locations in Michigan.
