Nerd Nite Ann Arbor presented by AADL at LIVE 102 S First St.

For the last year and a half, crowds have gathered each month in the early evening - in bars and venues around Ann Arbor. Around 7pm, it begins: three boisterous speakers geek out up front. What is this? Some secret club?

Nope! It's Nerd Nite Ann Arbor! And it's open to anyone and everyone who loves to learn or share what they love.

For the uninitiated, Nerd Nite (NN) has been described as “...like the Discovery Channel™…with beer!” Sounds fun, right? It is! NN is held monthly in 70+ cities, giving several folks the opportunity to give 18-21minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines. Imagine learning about everything from the science of the Simpsons to the genealogy of Godzilla. Fun stuff!

This month, your Nerd Nite A2 pals are bringing you:

Smart Devices, Presidential Sweets, and Civic Twitterbots

Nerd Nite A2 is all about approaching things from new perspectives this month. Sure our phones are smart now, but let’s consider the value of making other electronic devices intelligent enough to sense and transmit useful information - such as getting a heads up from your fridge before you’ve poured recently-spoiled milk over your cereal. We’ll review the sweeter side of presidential history with a project that re-interprets U.S. presidents as cupcakes, a lens through which even the worst policy decisions can become into melt-in-your-mouth magic. And finally, we’ll think about using social media to encourage voters to get to the polls, instead of as a method of sharing cat videos - and with the November election just behind us, we’ll even get to hear about how well it works! So come hungry for nanotechnology, Commander in Chief-flavored cupcakes, and civic-minded social media and join us for another nerdy good time.

When: Thursday, November 19, 2015, doors at 6:30pm, talks at 7pm!
Where: LIVE, 102 S First St, Ann Arbor
$$$: NO COVER! Courtesy of your pal, the Ann Arbor District Library!!

Matt DeJarld - How Nano-electronics might allow you to communicate with your refrigerator
Imagine having a refrigerator that can tell you when food has spoiled! The next technological revolution will be turning every appliance we use into a smart device. To create these devices, we need tiny sensors to allow the electronics to interact with the environment. Today these sensors are too large or too expensive, but luckily, engineers are working to reduce this sensor size and cost with the help of nano-electronics.

About Matt: Matt is a doctorate student at the University of Michigan. For the past few years, he has worked heavily with semiconductor nanostructures in efforts to improve the future of solar and indoor lighting technologies. In his free time he enjoys hiking with his dog, music, and movies/television.

Sherlonya Turner - 35 Offbeat Ways of Looking at the POTUS
Sometimes the President of the United States seems larger than life. This humorous talk will bring them down to size with anecdotes that present them as more man than myth. The Head of State Cakes project, in which a cake recipe is created in honor of each president, is what happens when you cross a lifelong interest in presidential history with a love of baking. The results are not only tasty, they’re pretty fun to talk about.

About Sherlonya: Sherlonya has an all-consuming and perhaps overwhelming love for the presidents. She's interested in them less as politicians and more as men. Her history degree helps her put things in context. Her library degree gives her research tips and tricks. Her love of cooking has inspired her to create a tribute cupcake for each US President; see them all at headofstatecakes.com. Her son is tired of hearing her talk about Lyndon Baines Johnson, her president boyfriend.

Sam Firke - Twitterbot Says Vote!
There are 90,000 registered voters in Ann Arbor. Most don't vote. I built a Twitter bot that matched voter names to Twitter accounts, then sent reminders to vote in local elections. Learn more about the problem, the project, and how it worked!

About Sam: Sam is a data analyst at an education nonprofit and a former high school math teacher. He's active in local politics, makes things, and raises a couple of small nerdlings. He’s involved with the Ann Arbor Brewers Guild (aabg.org) and you can find him on Twitter at @samfirke.

Buzzed Bee: A Grown-Up Spelling Bee at LIVE 102 S First St.

Are you a spelling geek who likes the taste of victory? Did losing your middle school spelling bee on the word "broccoli" leave you demanding a do-over?

Buzzed Bee is your chance to conquer some words, prove your 5th grade teacher wrong, and do it like an adult — in a bar! Buzzed Bee will combine some of that nostalgic middle-school spelling bee vibe with a super-fun, laid-back atmosphere, the option of beer, and the guarantee that each round will get more and more ridiculous. And, of course, we'll offer way better prizes than the "Super Speller!" sticker you'd have gotten in the 5th grade.

Doors open and sign-up starts at 6:30 and the spelling starts at 7:00! Space for participation is limited, so if you want a spot in the bee, come early!

Celebration Concert For AADL’s National Award for Subregional Library of the Year Featuring Blues & Boogie-Woogie Pianist Mr. B

The Washtenaw Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled at Ann Arbor District Library (WLBPD@AADL) was honored to receive the prestigious National Award for Subregional Library of the Year during a special luncheon ceremony on Friday, June 19 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Celebrate this honor locally with us at a special concert at the Downtown Library with Ann Arbor’s favorite blues & boogie-woogie pianist, Mark Lincoln Braun.

Mark (Mr. B) has become one of the premiere purveyors of a vanishing art. Having learned his craft first-hand from the early masters, he is a rare living link to the first generation of blues and boogie pianists. Steeped in the rich legacy of this tremendously exciting music, Mr. B learned directly from blues and boogie legends like Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red, and Blind John Davis. Mr. B appears by special arrangement with Great Lakes Performance Artists in Ann Arbor.

Light refreshments will be served and there will be ample opportunity to learn more about WLBPD@AADL services to blind and physically handicapped individuals throughout Washtenaw County. The community celebration will also include brief remarks by Vicki Collins, Head, Network Services Section of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) at the Library of Congress.

Celebrated Actress, Writer, and Producer Cindy Williams Discusses Her Career And Her New Autobiography: “Shirley, I Jest!: A Storied Life”

Actress, writer, and producer Cindy Williams is one of the most recognizable names and faces of 1970s & 1980s television.

Best known for her starring role in the hit TV show "Laverne and Shirley," she also had lead roles in such iconic films such as "American Graffiti" and Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation."

Join us for this truly special event at the Downtown Library as Cindy sits with local radio personality Lucy Ann Lance to discuss her life, career and new book Shirley, I Jest!: A Storied Life. In this hilarious and heartfelt book, she shares some of her most memorable stories including her role as Shirley Feeney in the iconic TV show "Laverne & Shirley." Vintage Base Ball Game

Striker to the line! Join us for a game of base ball by the rules of 1860, when sportsmanship ruled, spitting was not allowed, and baseball gloves hadn't been invented yet! These bare-handed base ballists strike with wooden bats, hurl a handmade vintage ball, and leg it around the bases to score tallies. Come on out to this family-friendly event to see a mixed squad of players from the Monitor Base Ball Club and the Merries Vintage Ladies Base Ball Club, both located in Chelsea, MI play a rousing match. Afterward, the teams will invite curious cranks (fans) to try their hand at hurling and striking. Huzzah!
