A History of the Ann Arbor’s People’s Food Co-op

Take a look at the history of the People's Food Co-Op from its humble beginnings on a sidewalk on State Street to a multimillion dollar cooperative store and café.

Patti Smith is the author of A History of Ann Arbor's People's Food Co-op, a new book rich with pictures, stories, anecdotes, and a comprehensive timeline. She will share her experiences in writing the book, as well as the history of the Co-op.

Patti is a special education teacher and writer who lives in Ann Arbor. She is very involved with her community, participating in the storytellers' guild, the public art commission, A2 Geeks, the Rec & Ed Commission, and the local film festival.

Delicious food samples will also be available!

Hut-K's Founder Talks About Food and the Human Machine

Dr. Mahaveer Swaroop Bhojani, Ph.D leads this talk on how to fuel your body with the best foods for energy and vitality.

Learn about the best fuels and additives for the human machine to remain well-oiled and less prone to failure. Learn about how processed foods impact health and longevity vs. all-natural, whole foods. Attendees will also learn about links between food and cancer.

Dr. Mahaveer Swaroop Bhojani, Ph.D., is a former cancer researcher in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan and currently heads Hut-K Inc (3022 Packard Road, with a second location at Mark's Carts, 211 West Washington Street) and Back2Roots (108 South Main Street).

Perfect Pies & Tarts

Keegan C. Rodgers, Head Baker at the People's Food Co-Op, leads this hands-on and lively workshop on how to make the perfect pie dough.

Participants will take home enough dough for 2 single crust pies or 1 double crust pie. Learn the difference between pies and tarts, understand the different fillings and crusts for pies and tarts and understand how to blind bake a pie shell.

Attendees will leave with new baking skills and literature to take home. Tastes of Keegan's baked goods will be included, too! This event is cosponsored by the People's Food Co-Op and is part of an ongoing baking series.

Fat, That’s Where It’s At

Some fats which may be discussed include milks, creams, butter, vegetable oils such as olive, corn & vegetable & nut oils such as almond, safflower, sunflowers & walnuts.

We will explore how our external environment, emotions, and sensory awareness impact our ability to digest our food and experiences at mealtime.

Andrea Catherine Bachman is an Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Hatha Yoga Instructor in Ann Arbor. She has a lifelong love for growing, preparing and sharing food – from gardening to farming, and from preparing specialized meals for oncology patients in treatment to creating personalized meal plans with individual clients.
