Fifth Avenue Press and U-M Press Book Cinema Ann Arbor Shortlisted for The Alice Award

The Ann Arbor District Library’s Fifth Avenue Press publishing imprint and the University of Michigan Press are excited to announce that their recent book Cinema Ann Arbor: How Campus Rebels Forged a Singular Film Culture by Frank Uhle is one of five books that have been included in the Alice Award Short List from Furthermore grants in publishing, a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund.

Ann Arbor, long known for its political and cultural activism, has an equally compelling history of engagement with film and media. Delving into almost 100 years of rarely glimpsed history, Cinema Ann Arbor melds interviews, deep archival research, and over four hundred images into a vivid history of film in one extraordinary town. These stories, told with urgency and exquisite detail, are firsthand accounts of the unforgettable people who created Ann Arbor’s magnificent twentieth-century film scene. This beautiful, full-color book was designed by Fifth Avenue Press and published and distributed by the University of Michigan Press.

Featuring interviews with filmmaker Ken Burns, Oscar-nominated editor Jay Cassidy, producer John Sloss, and more, this masterpiece provides insights into how a Midwestern college town developed a robust underground art film community that inspired those across the country. Variety’s Owen Glieberman says, “Frank Uhle has captured the moment when cinema became, for a new generation, a kind of religion, with its own rituals and sacred texts and a spirit of exploratory mystery that has all but vanished from the culture.”

THE PUBLISHERS:

The Ann Arbor District Library founded Fifth Avenue Press in 2017 as a locally-focused and publicly-owned publishing imprint to support the writing community in Washtenaw County and promote the creation of original content. The Library invests in the production of the finished work in exchange for permanent digital distribution of the completed work to AADL cardholders via the Library's website. For more information on Fifth Avenue Press visit fifthavenue.press.

The University of Michigan Press is a vital component of UM Library’s Michigan Publishing, which is the academic publishing division of the University of Michigan. In partnership with authors and series editors, the Press publishes in a wide range of humanities and social science disciplines as well as the Michigan and the Great Lakes region.

THE ALICE AWARD:

The $25,000 Alice Award, $5,000 for short listed books, will be announced on Tuesday, September 5 on the Furthermore website (www.furthermore.org). The Alice Award is being presented in a program at the Strand Book Store, Tuesday, October 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  The presentation of the awards will be streamed through the Strand Bookstore.

Joan Davidson in announcing the 2023 short list, commented: “In 1995 I established Furthermore, the grants in publishing program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund to support books and other publication projects. Last year we celebrated the first decade of the Alice the award I established to celebrate well-made illustrated books and the commitment of writers, editors, designers, illustrators and publishers to create these books. Our cultural history is passed down through written text and visual illustrations. This year’s shortlisted books reflect a range of topics, institutions, and design that reflect the diversity of our culture.”

AADL Named Five Star Library for the 15th Year in a Row

5 star

For the 15th year in a row, the Ann Arbor District Library earned five stars in Library Journal’s annual ratings of public libraries across the nation. AADL has been a five-star library since Library Journal created the America Star Libraries ratings in 2008.

“AADL is honored to receive this recognition from Library Journal for the 15th year in a row," said AADL Board of Trustees President Jim Leija. "The AADL Board extends our sincere congratulations to the AADL staff for this achievement, and our gratitude for all the work they do to ensure that AADL is one of the best library systems in the country.”

Library Director Eli Neiburger adds, "The Library Journal Star Index measures how much a community uses its library, and the communities of the AADL district really love to use their libraries! Thank you to all our patrons for all the visiting, borrowing, event attending, and more that happens at the library every day. And especially, thank you for always letting us know what you think about AADL, and how we can better serve, surprise, and delight you when you use your library."

LJ's ratings are based on per capita output measures based on FY20 data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Public Library Survey. Seven measures determined total scores and star ratings:

• Circulation of physical materials
• Circulation of electronic materials
• Library visits
• Library program attendance
• Public internet users
• WiFi sessions
• E-retrievals (usage of online content like databases)
• Library website visits

Eleven other libraries in the State of Michigan earned star ratings this year:
Benzie Shores District Library: three stars
Bloomfield Township Public Library: four stars
Capital Area District Library: three stars
Kent District Library: five stars
Leelanau Township Library: three stars
New Buffalo Township Library: four stars
Pentwater Township Library: three stars
Pinckney Community Public Library: five stars
Plymouth District Library: three stars
Saugatuck-Douglas District Library: three stars
West Bloomfield Township Public Library: five stars

Traverwood Elevator Outage

LIBRARY NEWS

In late August 2022, the hydraulic pump that powers the elevator at Traverwood failed, taking the elevator out of service. After attempts to repair the pump or get the elevator back into service were not successful, it was determined that a new pump and motor would be needed. Unfortunately, our vendors have been unable to locate the needed parts available for sale in the US due to ongoing supply chain and manufacturing issues.

Our current information is that the needed parts will arrive on November 30, 2022. Once the parts arrive our vendor should be able to get the elevator back into service within a few days. We will update the website banner when the elevator is back in service.

We're very sorry for this extended outage and the impact that it has on access to the library. We have exhausted the options available to us to make this happen sooner, and can only wait for the parts to arrive.

In the meantime, if this service outage impedes your access to the library, staff can bring your items out to you in the parking garage or on the street, wherever it's most convenient for you. Just call or text us when you arrive at 734-327-4200.

Thank you for your patience through this outage, and thank you for using your library!
