Translation of: Le città invisibili.
"A Helen and Kurt Wolff book."
In a garden sit the aged Kublai Khan and the young Marco Polo ' Mongol emperor and Venetian traveler. Kublai Khan has sensed the end of his empire coming soon. Marco Polo diverts his host with stories of the cities he has seen in his travels around the empire: cities and memory, cities and desire, cities and designs, cities and the dead, cities and the sky, trading cities, hidden cities. As Marco Polo unspools his tales, the emperor detects these fantastic places are more than they appear.

dreamy, thought-provoking read submitted by jgzhang on July 26, 2014, 11:19pm It's hard to describe Invisible Cities. It's simultaneously a traveler's tale, a thoughtful meditation on humanity and civilization, and a beautiful piece of prose. Even though it's not a conventionally entertaining read, this is the kind of book that lingers in your mind for a long time.

Jarring submitted by avandeusen on July 17, 2021, 11:00am I felt incredibly disoriented reading this book, as though the writing itself caused a change in how my body works (in the best way)

good to read in pieces, or all in one go submitted by nemiller on July 31, 2021, 10:52am This book is like a beautiful mosaic made up of brightly colored jewels; each city is beautiful as a stand-alone, and the whole thing put together is breath-taking.

Looking forward to revisiting this book submitted by tcramer318 on June 15, 2022, 2:33pm The best way for me to read this was in short pieces, so I could digest what was happening and really visit with the descriptions of the cities. I was confused a lot while reading this, but I definitely think it's going to be worth revisiting down the road. The writing style and the language is great for slowing you down and really making you think about what's being said about memories, desires, and the human condition. My only regret was reading it by myself- I think this book would make for a great discussion with other readers, so I'm hoping for that to be the case for my imminent reread.
