Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. He quickly finds himself at home with his new foster family: the loving Aunt Bella, the cantankerous Uncle Hec, and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home, both he and Hec go on the run in the bush. As a national manhunt ensues, the newly branded outlaws must face their options.

Goofy and Fun submitted by Maria Maguire on July 3, 2018, 11:48pm Kinda weird humor and cinematography, but maybe I'm just not used to Taika Waititi. Either way, I picked this up oh a whim but enjoyed it! Nothing super spectacular but definitely worth it for a fun watch.

Quirky in a good way submitted by Will O on August 26, 2020, 9:13am Didn't really get it the first time around but watching it again the humor really stood out as did the themes of finding your family even if you aren't related.
I really liked that it didn't shy away from darker moments and embraced that not everyone has a happy life. A lot of movies would have leaned too heavily on the fun and whimsy but Waititi once again struck a really good balance between the dark and light tones.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople submitted by leighsprauer on July 27, 2022, 9:06pm After a series of unfortunate events, Ricky Baker and his foster-father Hec find themselves on the lam in the New Zealand bush. They are being actively pursued by Child Protective Services as well as various civilians, who are under the false impression that Ricky is in danger.

This was such a delightful movie. The deadpan humor is what you would expect from the director of Jo Jo Rabbit (Taika Waititi); and although Jo Jo Rabbit had more laugh-out-loud moments, it also had flaws that Hunt for the Wilderpeople didn’t have. Julian Dennison (Ricky) had some spotty moments, acting-wise, but the rest of the acting was flawless. Like Jo Jo Rabbit, many of the characters were really characterizations, but were somehow all-the-more-relatable for their absurdity. The genius lies in their unexpectedness: just when you think you’ve figured out the trope, they do something completely out of character, or show a different side of their personality. And the kicker is that that new detail might either explain or contradict their eccentricity – you just never know. (An example is the juxtaposition of Bella’s cutesy animal-themed home décor with the dramatic and violent butcher of a wild pig. Who is this woman? What is her story?) The point seems to be that people are just bizarre; we all have a mishmash of contradictions inside us; Waititi uses extreme examples to show something that is true, to some degree, for all of us.

In addition to the magestical characters, and the humor, the film is also just beautifully shot. There are a few sequences in which people are moving around the forest, set to music, that are particularly lovely.
