East Coast collector, John Moses, will present some history and information about his own collection of West Coast pottery including Brayton Laguna, Bauer, Catalina and Padre. A brief mention of Homer Laughlin Fiesta ware will be made. This is part of the International Museum of Dinnerware Design’s Unforgettable Dinnerware lecture series.

Due to an ongoing national monopoly on beef, in May 1910 Detroit’s kosher meat prices jumped 250%. To feed their families amid rapid inflation, working-class Orthodox Jewish women fought back, organizing boycotts and even opening co-op markets to feed the community. Riots sometimes erupted when they targeted people breaking their boycott. In this lecture, historian Catherine Cangany recovers a forgotten moment in Michigan’s culinary past.

Join us for a demonstration on making and decorating nerikiri representing the four seasons by Toshiko Sugii Steffes. Wagashi are traditional Japanese confections originally made to be served at tea ceremonies. They are considered a visual and culinary art form and are often enjoyed during special occasions or seasonal transitions. Nerikiri is a type of Wagashi that is created using white butter beans, sugar, mochi, and food coloring.  

This demonstration will happen twice, first at 2:00pm then again at 6:00pm.
