Description

Chances are, you have some treasures packed away or stored in an attic – books, papers, maps, photographs, videos, LPs, or tapes. Or maybe you have images or files on your computer that are just one crash away from extinction. Come for one-on-one consultations with U-M Library experts who will help you determine how to repair, scan, store, display, and care for your gems to keep them well preserved. Along with book and paper conservators from the Conservation Lab, experts from the Digital Preservation Lab will be on hand to advise on preserving content on aging or obsolete media, such as floppy and optical disks, and make recommendations on file formats and storage options. Experts from the Digital Conversion Unit will also be on hand to discuss scanning old books, photos, and documents.

Below is a list of items that we will be offering advice on:

  • Preservation of books, manuscripts, parchment, papyrus, works of art on paper
  • Preservation of digital media - digital content stored in aging or obsolete formats; recommend file formats for long-term access and reuse; discuss short, medium, and long-term storage options; develop strategies for migrating and preserving content on aging or obsolete media such as floppy and optical disks (ex. 5.25 inch floppies, 3.5 inch floppies, optical media (CD, DVD), USB media).
  • Digitization and photography of maps, posters, and other flat media, as well as limited audio and moving image digitization. This work includes photographing three-dimensional artifacts when needed.

In order to be able to serve everyone who comes, we ask that participants bring a maximum of two items.

This event is offered in conjunction with Preservation Week, a national initiative to connect people with resources to preserve cultural heritage. It is in partnership with the Department of Preservation and Conservation and the Digital Conversion Unit at the University of Michigan Library.

Comments

Will this cover 8mm home movies? I have some that need cleaning and to be converted to digital format.

Thanks for your patience! I asked the organizers about 8mm film and while they did not list that specifically, they did give me a list of what they'll be able to consult on. This list is now above in the description of the event. We hope to see you at the event!
