Description

Painters and perfumers capture the fleeting fullness of roses in their respective arts. The artist offers proof by vision. The perfumer offers proof by smell, which evokes memories of encounters with roses stored in the brain.   The creative process for one is more mysterious than the other.

This Smell & Tell program will change that by examining one of the first assignments given to a perfumer in training; the creation of an olfactory portrait of a rose.   Fragrance categories in rose horticulture are codified by chemical analysis (odor profile), which puts the perfumer at an advantage. Attendees will experience five accords particular to the terroir of a Damask rose (rosa damascena) as interpreted in perfumery.

Two slightly different olfactory portraits of the Damask rose will be evaluated by smell afterward, offering a deeper understanding of qualities in rose scent. Damask rose absolute, a natural material, will be smelled on perfume blotters at the beginning of class for olfactory perspective.

The Smell and Tell series of art+science programming is led by Michelle Krell Kydd, a trained nose in flavors and fragrance who shares her passion for gastronomy, sensory evaluation and the perfume arts on Glass Petal Smoke. Smell & Tell builds community through interactions with flavor, fragrance and storytelling
