Never Give Up with Internationally-Acclaimed Musician Romel Joseph

Internationally- known musician Romel Joseph embodies both success and resilience in every aspect of his life. He lost his eyesight as a child, learned to play several musical instruments, graduated from one of the nation's top music institutions, The Juilliard School and founded an elementary and music school in Port-au-Prince Haiti for children that was destroyed twice -- once by fire in 2000 and by earthquake in 2010.

Four years later, his spirit remains persistent on accomplishing his life's mission - creating Haiti's first music conservatory and performing arts center.

Mr. Joseph has served as keynote speaker for the National Industries for the Blind in Cincinnati, and the United Nations Human Rights Day Assembly in Geneva. Both the State of Connecticut and the city of Miami have established Romel Joseph Days in their communities in his honor.

Mr. Joseph wants to share his positive spirits with everyone who struggles with the challenges they face by never giving up -- no matter what! Join us for Romel Johnson's words of inspiration followed by a musical performance and question and answer session.

For You My Door Is Always Open: The One-Woman Show On Golda Meir

Ann Arbor welcomes back RoseLynn Katz for her acclaimed one-woman show, "For You My Door Is Always Open: A One-Woman Show On Golda Meir." RoseLynn wrote and stars in this production, which was originally directed by David Novak. In this one-hour show, we first meet Golda as a loving grandmother before she takes us back to dramatic scenes from her life: as a terrified child witnessing a pogrom in Russia; a gutsy young activist in America; her political rise as the only woman in the man’s world of Israeli politics; her courage in disguising herself as an Arab woman on a dangerous journey through enemy lines; and her agony and eventual triumph as Israel’s Prime Minister during the Yom Kippur War.

RoseLynn Katz, who lived and performed in the Ann Arbor area in the 1980s and now resides in North Carolina, developed "My Door Is Always Open" after much intensive research. She last appeared in Ann Arbor in 2010 with her one-woman show, "The Devil Touched My Tongue: The Life And Wit Of Dorothy Parker," which examined Parker’s life and writings.

"For You My Door Is Always Open" premiered in Asheville, North Carolina earlier this year to much acclaim. RoseLynn is extremely pleased to bring the production to Ann Arbor.

New York Times Bestselling Mystery Author Nevada Barr Discusses Her New Mystery "Destroyer Angel”

Award-winning mystery author Nevada Barr makes a special visit at AADL to discuss her new mystery novel in the Anna Pigeon series,Destroyer Angel. This event, co-sponsored by AADL and Aunt Agatha’s Mystery Bookshop, includes a book signing and books will be for sale.

For park ranger Anna Pigeon, the indomitable heroine of Nevada Barr’s best-selling series, the wilderness has always been a second home. Anna enters the forest again in this new mystery, embracing its unforgiving rules and feeling herself edge closer to the dangerous nature of its inhabitants.

While on a camping trip in Minnesota’s Iron Range, Anna heads away from her group for a moment to spend some time alone in the wild; while she does so, the group she left behind is approached by four armed men, intending to take them hostage. The mysterious captors march the group through the wilderness, to a rendezvous spot with an airplane; but Anna is never far behind, and while she may not be armed, she has the advantage of knowing how to survive in the wilderness—and how to stalk one’s prey.

A novelist, actor, and painter, New York Times best-selling author Nevada Barr has put her own experience as a National Park Service Ranger to repeated good use. Though Nevada Barr was born in the state that shares her name, her father actually named her after a favorite book character of his – a predestined connection to writing and storytelling. Nevada currently resides in New Orleans with her husband and many pets; she has since retired from the parks service, devoting herself full-time to her writing career.

I Can Hear the Sun

Explore selected readings from Wild Swan Theater's newest "play-in progress" for upper elementary and middle school audiences inspired by award-winning children's book author Patricia Polacco. Your feedback will help us shape this production premiering in 2014.

The adaptation of the book to the stage is being done jointly by local poet, journalist, editor Jennifer Burd, and Laszlo Slomovits (of the children's musical duo Gemini) who is also writing music for the play.

In this modern myth, discover the story of Fondo, a young, homeless boy who begins to find his place in the world as he tends a group of wild geese in a city park.

The Geddes Letters

Join the Washtenaw County Historical Society (WCHS) and AADL for the unveiling of the Geddes Letters, an online collection of letters, written between Ann Arbor settler, John Geddes, and his brother William Geddes of Pennsylvania, between 1825 and 1844. The letters will be fully accessible for browsing and searching online on the Library website at aadl.org.

The Geddes name figures prominently in our rich local history. Dating from the early settlement of Ann Arbor, the brothers' correspondence, fully transcribed by local historians, details the daily life of early 19th century settlers, while shedding light on the origins of our community and the national concerns of the day.

Members of the Washtenaw County Historical Society will be on hand to discuss some of the surprises and historical treasures to be found in this invaluable research collection. AADL staff will also provide a brief demonstration of the site.
