AADL Book Discussion: Hillbilly Elegy

Join AADL staff and community members for a discussion of Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J. D. Vance.

This fascinating and moving book is the author's own story of his family, and how he moved from poverty to a middle class life while battling the demons of his upbringing. The eye-opening book describes poverty in America from a first-hand perspective, and explains how growing up poor leaves a lasting effect. Staff will lead a discussion of the book and related themes.

Can't make this discussion? There will be a second session on on the same book and topic on Saturday, May 13 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm at Malletts Creek Branch.

Tiny Expo: Indie Art & Craft Fair

Join us for Tiny Expo Saturday, December 12 from 11-5:30, and shop local artists and crafters selling their wares in a festive library space where you can shop local and handmade! It's a great way to support your community and find unique gifts. This year features over 40 artists - check out the vendor list!

Just what IS Tiny Expo? It's a fun, local and handmade shopping experience that began with a small group of artists in 2010. As the initial group of creative folks banded together to hold a fun, informal little fair, expo-goers responded, and the show grew just a teeny bit each year. Finding a location that could fit everyone was a perennial challenge, though, and so Tiny Expo jumped around town — from Kerrytown to Felch Street and back again, and it lands at AADL again this year.

Library Camp: An Unconference

Library Camp doesn't mean burned marshmallows, mosquito bites, or popsicle stick-based art projects. Library Camp is an informal unconference gathering to share ideas, technologies, and discussions. This event is free to attend and will be held at the Downtown Library. Click here to register.

The goal is to get a bunch of people together, and let them talk about whatever they'd like to talk about, within the rough purview of libraries and library technology. We'll start with a blank schedule and get together to talk about what we'd like to talk about and fill in a few slots on the agenda. We've got time for four sessions and room for at least 4 concurrent sessions, so there could easily be 10-12 different things to talk about during the day.

To help focus the conversation, we're proposing 4 tracks: Nontraditional Collections, Ebooks & Licensing, Special Events, Summer & Gaming. AADL staff will be on hand to talk a bit about these things at AADL, but like any unconference, the event is led by whoever shows up! Here's a rough schedule:

Doors open and Bagel Breakfast: 9:30-10:00am

Welcome: 10:00-10:30am

Session 1: 10:30-11:30am
Session 2: 11:30-12:30am

Lunch on your own: 12:30-2:00pm

Session 3: 2:00-3:00pm
Session 4: 3:00-4:00pm

Wrap up and Farewell: 4:00-4:30pm
