Eck Stanger, chief photographer for the Ann Arbor News for 40 years, landed the job because he was the only News employee able to read the German instructions for his secondhand Speed Graphic camera. Or so the legend goes. Over the course of his four decades as photographer - and the News’ sole photographer during its first 12 years--“one-shot Stanger,” as he came to be known--captured famous statesmen, princes, and presidents, as well as eminent artists, musicians, scientists, and athletes.

Graced by the Huron River with an abundance of parks, Ann Arbor offers residents and visitors entertainment, sports, shopping, dining, and of course, the University of Michigan.

Legendary Locals of Ann Arbor, Michigan celebrates its citizens. Many are creative artists, inspiring educators, dedicated public servants, and determined business owners. With the exception of Lewis the cat, who reigned at Downtown Home and Garden, this book is filled with stories about people who have made and are making Ann Arbor one of the best places to live in the United States.

Join co-author Joanne Nesbit as she discusses some of the great stories they discovered while putting together the book and how local legends were selected. With a career spanning journalism and as a public information officer at Indiana University and the University of Michigan, Nesbit has always been fascinated by local history, stories, and people. She is the author of three other books, and is the founder of Knitwits at the University of Michigan.

The event includes a book signing and books will be on sale.

Imagine learning about everything from the science of the Simpsons to the genealogy of Godzilla. Fun stuff!

Doors open at 6:30, and speakers start at 7pm.

The 2017 documentary "Grooming a Generation" is a 30-minute film directed by Andy Sacks about local Ypsilanti barbers and their innovative program to get young customers reading:

Join us for a screening of this captivating film, followed by a panel discussion with Emmy Award-winning director Sacks and some of the barbers who appear in the film.

Join kit house researchers Andrew and Wendy Mutch and learn about the fascinating history of catalog and kit homes, including Michigan's role in the kit house industry.

The presentation explores the steps of buying and building a catalog house through the story of one Ann Arbor family's home. Attendees will also be taken on a photographic tour of some of the more than 200 catalog and kit houses located in and around Ann Arbor.

Andrew and Wendy Mutch are kit house enthusiasts, researchers and owners of a 1926 Sears Roebuck “Hamilton” kit house in Novi.

“Home.” “Mom & pop businesses.” "Work." “Church.” The names of our most-frequented places are also euphemisms for our relationships with the people in them, and for the same reason; these places are the living expression of our values and beliefs. The fact that we all spend most of our time interacting with the built environment is one of the few experiences most humans on the planet have in common. Yet even though we’re all connected through the places we share, we are more able to say definitively when we don’t like a sandwich than when we don’t like a space.

Ari Weinzweig, co-founder of the Zingerman’s Deli, has discovered this paradox for himself in his latest book, A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to the Power of Beliefs in Business.

In delving into the history of the Deli’s building, he was simply looking for a new way to tell the old story of Zingerman’s beginnings; but in doing so he discovered a deep connection to its builder, to the community of businesses he has helped to cultivate, and ultimately forged stronger connections to the people around him today.

This program will be moderated by Jessica A.S. Letaw, who enjoys working on, thinking over, and telling stories about architecture. Jessica's past day jobs included design/build and construction firms.

The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor invites you to celebrate their 100th anniversary through this Downtown Library exhibit.

Founded in 1916, the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor (RCAA) has played a significant role in the life and activities of Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, and the world. Often identified as a town and gown club, the original group of 15 Charter members was comprised of citizens from the town and the University of Michigan. Currently, RCAA has 320 members, the largest Rotary Club in the state of Michigan. This current exhibit showcases its activities over the years, its growth of programs and membership, and highlights the universal access playground to be built in Gallup Park in 2017—a gift to the city of Ann Arbor in honor of RCAA’s 100-year celebration.
