Join us in getting ready for 2023's Fall Seed Sampler, and package seeds with other plant lovers. The AADL Seed Sampler provides patrons and residents of Washtenaw County with starter packs of seed to promote gardening knowledge and experience. Come help pack the seeds to get ready for the fall launch! What you will be doing: dividing seeds into envelopes of 20-40 seeds, depending on the variety.  Come on by and choose a workstation, instructions will be provided. If you need volunteer hours logged, please bring a form for staff to verify your hours at the event.

This event has been moved from Traverwood to Westgate.

This fun and informative presentation from author Bevin Cohen highlights the importance of saving and sharing our garden seeds and how to successfully do it at home! Learn why planting, saving, and sharing seeds is essential to the cultivation of sustainable neighborhoods and healthy communities. Bevin will share practical tips and advice through a blend of hands-on demonstration and lecture.

Smell & Tell | The Curious Fact of Horse Aromatics

Writer and oral historian George Ewart Evans (1910-1988) collected stories from horse whisperers in East Anglia that were members of the Society of Horsemen (aka The Horseman’s Word), a secret fraternal society founded in northeast Scotland during the early 19th century.
 
The horse whisperers embraced a holistic sensory approach to taming horses that included natural aromatic oil mixtures designed to manage behavior. Secret formulas were designed to attract good behavior (drawing) and discourage/repel bad behavior (jading).
 

Gardening & DIY Fest | Michigan DNR Volunteer Stewardship Program

Join Kelsey Dietz from the Michigan DNR’s Stewardship Unit for a talk on the volunteer stewardship program. Learn how you can help eradicate invasive species from high quality ecosystems at local state park land such as Pinckney and Waterloo Recreation Area.

Gardening & DIY Fest | To Dye or Not to Dye

Ann Asplund will tell how to use, find, harvest and grow plant dyes and how to minimize the impact on the environment. Besides teaching the basic of dyeing how the dyes work, and chemical safety, more sustainable practices and alternative mordants will be presented. Color samples will be available.
